When Death Reminds Us of Life: A Reflection on Loss, Legacy, and What Truly Matters

This week, like many across the world, I was deeply saddened by the news of Liverpool FC’s Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva tragically passing away in a car accident in Spain. Just days after Jota celebrated his wedding, he and his brother lost their lives, leaving behind a wife and three young children.

As a Liverpool supporter, and more importantly as a father, this news hit hard. My own boys still chant, “Oh he wears the number 20…” with joy every time Jota’s name is mentioned.

He wasn’t just a footballer. He was part of the soundtrack of my boys daily chants.

It’s a stark and painful reminder that life is fragile. No amount of fame, success, or money can protect us from our appointed time. Death does not discriminate.

“Every soul shall taste death.”
— Qur’ān 3:185, 21:35, 29:57

This verse from the Qur’ān is one many of us have heard time and time again. But it takes on a different weight when we witness such events unfold. It reminds us that every one of us has a set time, written by the Almighty, that cannot be brought forward or delayed by even a second.

We mourn high-profile tragedies like this with heavy hearts. But we should also spare a thought for the countless others around the world who pass away without headlines or hashtags. Especially our brothers and sisters in Gaza and across the Ummah, whose lives are lost daily, often in silence, yet their worth in the sight of Allāh is just as great.

These moments are not just for mourning, but for reflecting.

What are we chasing? What are we prioritising? What legacy are we leaving behind?

In this world of property, sales, and negotiations, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day. But real success is preparing for what comes after. Being present with our loved ones. Living with purpose. And never losing sight of what truly matters.

May Allāh guide our hearts, keep us grounded, and help us live in a way that prepares us for our own return. Aameen ya Rabb.

While football carries on and life moves forward, a mother is left mourning the loss of her two sons — and three children will grow up without their father.
